She is also a professor of Postsecondary Education and Community College Leadership and affiliated faculty in the Joint PhD Program at San Diego State University (SDSU). Prior to joining SDSU, she served as an assistant professor of Community College Leadership and affiliated faculty in Public Policy at Oregon State University from 2012-2015. Dr. Herrera Villarreal completed her Ph.D. in Education (emphasis in Higher Education &amp; Organizational Change) at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she was a research analyst for the UCLA Higher Education Research Institute (HERI). She also earned a master\u2019s degree from UCLA, master\u2019s and bachelor\u2019s degrees from the University of New Mexico (UNM) and an associate\u2019s degree from UNM-Taos (branch community college). Her scholarship is enhanced by nearly two decades of experience as a higher education professional at two- and four-year institutions, several Minority-Serving Institutions\/Hispanic-Serving Institutions, including faculty and professional positions in student affairs, institutional research, and administration. \u00a0Her work is also informed by her own educational history as a community college graduate, low-income, first-generation college student, and motherscholar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Herrera Villarreal is a consummate scholar, who has published in top tier, peer-reviewed journals, including:\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Educational Research Journal (AERJ), Journal of Higher Education (JHE), Research in Higher Education (RIHE), and The Review of Higher Education (RHE),<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and has procured over $14 million in funding to support her research. She serves or has served as the PI for several large-scale research projects, including NSF funded projects\u2014ED-SYSTEMS (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=1644990\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID%3D1644990&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633811017399000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGjklZ_mXxKo3Tme0zzETIEzdwvfw\">NSF DUE-1644990<\/a>) and HSI-STEM (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=1832528\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID%3D1832528&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633811017399000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHnJqzfkeH1asWkzX5Bu8w7fF7HXw\">NSF DUE-1832528<\/a>)\u2014investigating the role of community colleges and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and as Co-PI for ADAPT: A Pedagogical Decision-Making Study (<a href=\"https:\/\/nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=1759947&amp;HistoricalAwards=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID%3D1759947%26HistoricalAwards%3Dfalse&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633811017399000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHngdI_VGxa-tv8upICUV9E-YDoXQ\">NSF HRD-1759947<\/a>) and\u00a0NSF INCLUDES Alliance: ALRISE \u2013 Accelerate Latinx Representation In STEM Education with Institutional Intentionality and Capacity Building for Experiential Learning (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=2120021&amp;HistoricalAwards=false\">NSF\u00a0HRD-2120021<\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To inform system-wide change, her research employs advanced statistical techniques, including multilevel modeling. spatial analysis and social network analysis, to examine contextual factors\u2014institutional (structure, process, and policy), geographic, demographic, political and economic contexts\u2014that impact postsecondary outcomes for students of color.
